The 2000s Cross Coins and Pre-Demonetization Notes

As we move into the 21st century, the focus of Indian numismatics shifts toward the “Unity in Diversity” series (the Cross coins) and the now-historic pre-demonetization high-value notes. In 2026, these items have become quintessential for any collection focused on modern economic history.

The “Cross” Series (2004–2006)

The “Unity in Diversity” design, featuring a central cross dividing four dots, was only minted for three years before being discontinued. This short run has made them a prime target for collectors.

• 2004 1 Rupee Cross Coin: This is the undisputed “King” of the cross series. Because it was the first year and had low mintage, a 2004 1 rupee coin value in top condition is between ₹1,500 and ₹2,500.
• 2005 10 Rupee Cross Coin: This bimetallic coin is highly sought after. If you find a 2005 10 rupee coin value piece, it can fetch between ₹2,000 and ₹4,000 depending on the mint mark.
• 2006 1 Rupee Cross Coin: While more common than the 2004 issue, it is still considered “scarce.” It typically trades for ₹100 to ₹300.

️ Commemorative 5 Rupee Coins (2014)

The year 2014 was prolific for commemorative 5-rupee nickel-brass coins.

• Jawaharlal Nehru (125th Birth Anniversary): A common but beautiful coin, worth ₹50 to ₹150.
• BHEL (50 Years of Excellence): If you have the Noida Mint version, it’s a collector’s favorite, valued at ₹100 to ₹250.
• Komagata Maru Incident: One of the rarer 2014 issues. A Kolkata Mint piece can fetch ₹800 to ₹1,500.

Pre-Demonetization Notes (2010–2015)

Since the 2016 demonetization, the old “Mahatma Gandhi Series” 500 and 1000 rupee notes have become purely numismatic items.

• 2012 Old 500 Rupee Note: A standard circulated note from 2012 is worth its curiosity value (around ₹600 to ₹800). However, if it features a fancy serial number like “000001” or “786786,” the price can skyrocket to ₹5,000+.
• 2015 Ka 500 Ka Note: These were among the last batches printed before the ban. Notes signed by Raghuram Rajan in crisp, uncirculated (UNC) condition are currently valued at ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 by collectors looking to complete their sets.
• 2010 5 Rupees Note: These are still common, but look for the “Star Series” (∗) notes or those with the D. Subbarao signature. These can be worth ₹100 to ₹300.
